Young Carers Action Day 2021
Welcome to Young Carers Action Day 2021!
This is where you’ll find all the information you need on Young Carers Action Day (YCAD) 2021, taking place on March 16 2021.
As we move closer to YCAD 2021, you will also find here materials (in English and Welsh) like posters, social media graphics and ‘how to’ guides that will help you get involved in YCAD 2021 – whether you’re a young carer, a young adult carer or someone who works with young/young adult carers.
We will also be producing resources for other professionals who want to support young/young adult carers during YCAD 2021, like policymakers or employers.
What is Young Carers Action Day (YCAD)?
Young Carers Action Day is an annual event, organised by Carers Trust.
It has taken place over the last six years to raise awareness of young carers and the incredible contribution they make to their families and local communities.
Until now, YCAD stood for Young Carers Awareness Day. But following feedback from young carers, we have made some changes, including the name!
You can find out more below on the changes we have made to YCAD.
What’s new about YCAD this year?
Thanks to some really important feedback from young carers, we’ve made some really important changes:
- We have changed the name to Young Carers Action Day.
- YCAD will now take place in March, not January. This year it’s March 16.
- We wanted to amplify the voice of young carers and put them right at the heart of planning for YCAD. So we have created a Steering Group of young/young adult carers.
- Previously YCAD was for young carers only, up to 18. From this year on, we wanted to include young adult carers, aged 18 – 25.
What is the theme for YCAD 2021?
We’ve had some great conversations with young/young adult carers. They told us they wanted the day to be about their futures, highlighting the incredible skills they have developed through being a carer – like resilience, time-management and empathy.
These are all important skills, not just for young people moving into higher education - but also for those looking to enter the workplace. What’s more, they are skills highly sought after by employers.
So YCAD 2021 will be all about young carers’ futures. The theme is: Protect Young Carers' Futures.
What will we be calling for during YCAD 2021?
When we spoke to young/young adult carers they were really clear that YCAD 2021 must be about action and delivering change for young/young adult carers.
This is why we are talking to young/young adult carers right now, so they can help us develop actions that young/young adult carer groups can take to engage with employers, calling on them to recognise their skills so employers are much more likely to recruit young/young adult carers.
And Carers Trust employees will be developing policy briefings calling on decision-makers in each UK nation to develop new national Action Plans for children and young people with caring responsibilities – which must address education, employability and health and wellbeing.
We will also be making this a key message for media interviews. We’ll be saying young/young adult carers have amazing skills, but governments need to do more so young carers’ skills count – and that’s why we need Action Plans for young/young adult carers.
