Carers Trust Wales Youth Council

We are proud to work with our Youth Council to raise awareness and recognition of the issues of importance to young and young adult carers.

We meet with our youth council members 3 times a year during half-term breaks to discuss the things that are important to them, seek their advice on our priorities and approaches and to have fun.
The Youth Council was formed in 2018 and over the last 2 years this dedicated group of young people have made a huge impact. Several council members have given crucial evidence to the Health, Social Care and Sport Committee in the Welsh Assembly about how the current legislation has impacted on their caring role. Their evidence has influenced the final recommendations given by the committee in their report to Welsh Government, which is a significant document addressing carers’ rights and support.
In 2018, our Youth Council members voted for their representatives in the Welsh Youth Parliament, Oliver Davies WYMP and Grace Barton WYMP, who have used their experience and voice to advocate for carers rights within their communities and in political settings.
All members of our Youth Council have caring responsibilities either for parent, a sibling or a friend and they are all supported by our Network Partners.
Welsh Youth Parliament met on the 14th of November, where young carer Grace highlighted some of the key issues for young carers during the pandemic.

They also created a poem, which you can watch here.
Our wonderful Youth Council worked with @NeiKaradog and @RedBeetleFilms to create a poem and video about what caring means to them.
