The Young Carers Futures event (provisionally scheduled for Spring 2019) will bring together a group of young adult carers between the ages of 16-18 for a two-day residential. The residential will focus on their education, personal development, mindfulness and finance & housing, helping them be better informed about their options and inspiring them to think ambitiously about their futures.
Due to their caring responsibilities, many carers don’t have time to focus on themselves and young adult carers miss, on average, 10 weeks of school every year. This impacts on their attainment, ability to form friendships and aspirations and, additionally, over a quarter of young carers say they are bullied. The majority of carers report that their health and well-being is affected as a result of caring and long term, young carers are substantially more likely than their peers to not be in education employment or training.
This project will inspire young carers to think about their future with confidence, giving them the tools and ideas they need to achieve what they want out of life. Through a range of coaching sessions, the carers will be empowered to focus on themselves and make an action plan for their future. Participants will be supported to share their learning with their peers, inspiring other carers to think proactively about their futures.
Young Carers Futures will be supported by match-funded donations raised through the Big Give’s #ChristmasChallenge18. Make a donation online between 12pm on Tuesday 27 November and 12pm on Tuesday 4 December to have your donation doubled.
