Cookery classes

Some local carer services offer workshops where you can learn to cook or try out new ideas. You may be able to meet other carers who understand how difficult it can be to find time to eat well.  

Eating well on a budget

Find out how to eat well if you are trying to manage on a tight budget.  There are ways to eat well for less, for example planning meals in advance, freezing food and looking out for good offers. A good place to start is:

You may also be able to get help with Healthy Start, where you get free vouchers every week to spend on milk, plain fresh and frozen fruit and vegetables, and infant formula milk. You can also get free vitamins from Healthy Start.

Buying healthy food if you find it hard to leave the house

You may find it helpful to do your grocery shopping online if you find it hard to take time away from the person you care for or you don't have your own car or access to public transport.

Have meals delivered

Your council or other local organisations may provide you (or the  person you care for) with meals delivered to your home, if you are eligible. This is sometimes called meals on wheels. See if you can can get meals at home.

There are also companies who will deliver ready meals to your home that you can just heat up.  Search online for 'ready meals delivered to you'. This may also be something that the person you care for can manage for themselves if you are not around. 

You can also buy ready meals at the supermarket and they may be able to be delivered to your home if you shop online

Talk to your GP

If you worried about your eating and your health tell your GP. Make sure they know you are a carer.
