To anyone who wants to become a Media Ambassador, DO IT!

Each year in the lead up to the Scottish Young Carers Festival, a group of young carers aged 16 – 18 form the Media Ambassadors. This group take part in training with Media Education and learn new filmmaking, editing and communication skills to create films and make a real impact in raising awareness about young carer issues.

The Media Ambassadors also take part in opportunities to showcase their film to key decision makers and start important conversations in a creative way.

In 2020, the Media Ambassadors took part in online training workshops and created a powerful film exploring young carers’ experiences of lockdown.

We spoke with Sam, aged 16, who has been part of the Media Ambassadors, to learn more about what this opportunity is like and why others should get involved!

Why did you join the Media Ambassadors?

I joined the media ambassadors as I was super interested in what it would be about and I came back because of what can be done through the work we do!

Have you learned any new skills from being part of the Media Ambassadors?

It’s nice to almost be let loose and be as creative as you want to be, it’s helped me hone my team working skills and has made me contemplate deeper on my caring role and what can be done to create change!

What is your favourite memory from the Media Ambassadors?

My favourite memory has to be going out with the cameras and being able to have a laugh with the other ambassadors. Not taking ourselves too seriously but still being able to make a powerful message.

What would you say to others who are interested in becoming a Media Ambassador this year?

To anyone who wants to become a media ambassador, DO IT! It’s so good and I cannot recommend it enough. You make great friends and you make something that you can be really proud of!
