Research on financial disadvantage among racially minoritised carers
Carer benefits for black, Asian and minoritised ethnic communities
A research study commissioned by Carers Trust
Carers from a range of groups, including those from LGBTQ+ and ethnic minoritised communities, are under-represented in the support they receive as carers.
Carers Trust has therefore commissioned research from RSM Consulting LLP to provide a comprehensive study on the financial challenges experienced by black, Asian and ethnic minoritised carers as a result of their caring role. The study also examines the accessibility of financial benefits for carers from these communities.
Key findings from the study include:
While all groups of carers encounter financial challenges, those from black, Asian and minoritised ethnic backgrounds often face additional hurdles.
Black, Asian and minoritised ethnic carers often mistrust statutory services. This stems from past discrimination, fear and bias. It can result in some black, Asian and minoritised ethnic carers feeling discouraged from engaging with services.
There is a critical need for culturally sensitive support for black, Asian and minoritised ethnic carers. Understanding and respecting the role of familial duty, cultural norms and values is key to providing inclusive services.
