The Children’s Minister, Edward Timpson, today told Parliament that the Government intends to change the law to improve rights for young carers.

After many weeks of campaigning from Carers Trust and other charities — and most recently, from the fantastic public support added from people emailing their MPs and getting involved in our #StillWaiting Thunderclap campaign — we are really delighted by the news.

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who got behind the campaign. Your voices have made a real difference!

Significant opportunity for lasting change for young carers

Our Director of Policy, Moira Fraser has said:

“We are very pleased that the Children’s Minister has chosen to listen to the concerns of the sector. This is something that the National Young Carers Coalition have been calling for for some time.”

“The new Census data suggests there are more than 166,000 young carers in England, but we believe this shocking figure is just the tip of the iceberg. We must act now to stop many more children remaining hidden from view, missing out on the support they so desperately need.

“The introduction of the Children and Families Bill and the Care Bill represent significant opportunities to improve the long-term outcomes for young carers and we look forward to continuing discussions with government to ensure that this opportunity for meaningful and lasting change is not missed.
