Newry & Mourne Carers are again at the centre of development of innovative carers services. As a network partner of Carers Trust they have collaborated to assist with research into the trials and challenges faced by young adult carers by hosting one to one interview sessions with 8 Young Adult Carers from the centre.

The research was carried out by Ms Feylyn Lewis from Birmingham University who is carrying out a study nationally into young adult carers. It is expected that the full report will be published within the next 6 months and will be a valuable resource tool in the development and provision of Young Adult Carer services.

Sinead Houston (Young Adult Carers Manager) commented: “We work very closely with Carers Trust in relation to issues surrounding Young Adult Carers and regularly attend workshops in England with other Young Adult Carers to look at how young adult carers can be best supported. The sharing of ideas and knowledge gained is key to us providing a service which is relevant and user led. The opportunity to feed into a national report is seen as high recognition of the work we are already doing in the field and gives a great boost to the carers who realise that they are being listened to and that their views will be represented in the report. We were delighted to facilitate Carers Trust, the university of Birmingham and Feylyn. We wish her all the best in her work.”
