Responding to the Autumn Statement Joe Gannon, Director of Policy and Research at Carers Trust, said:

"It is a huge mistake for the Chancellor – in this year of developing the new Carers Strategy – to ignore both the evidence and the multiple calls to raise funding for social care.

"He has missed this opportunity to make a difference to the lives of millions of unpaid carers. The services that support carers and the people they care for will continue to disappear, and the pressure on the NHS will only get worse.

"This is doubly disappointing given the rise in the National Living Wage.

"We know that this will add to the pressure on carers and carers charities because the care sector as a whole is already struggling due to the lack of social care funding, to attract and retain the workforce they need to support unpaid carers and the people they care for.

"The decision to postpone tackling the challenges of an ageing population until the next spending review is also unwise - action is needed for older carers now."
