"I Like Being a Young Carer" - Lachlan’s First Time at the Scottish Young Carers Festival

“It’s so much fun here!” That’s how young carer Lachlan described his first ever visit to the Scottish Young Carers Festival, and it’s a moment we won’t forget.

Lachlan is one of the many amazing young carers who joined us this summer for three days filled with friendship, fun and a much needed break from daily responsibilities. Like thousands of young carers across Scotland, Lachlan helps look after a family member - in his case, his younger sister, who is autistic.

Finding Friendship and Fun

From the moment he arrived, Lachlan got stuck in with all the activities. Whether it was arts and crafts, outdoor games, or making new friends, he made the most of the experience.

“I’ve met lots of new friends and I’ve found it really fun playing about and doing all the different activities.”

For many young carers, the Scottish Young Carers Festival is one of the only times they can truly switch off and enjoy being kids - Lachlan was no exception.

“I Like That I’ve Been Recognised”

Being a young carer can often go unnoticed. That’s why one of the most important parts of the Scottish Young Carers Festival is showing young people that what they do matters and that they deserve to be seen, heard, supported and celebrated.

“I like being a young carer... I like that I’ve been recognised for what I do.”

Those words are a powerful reminder of how important it is to create spaces where young carers feel valued and not just for their caring roles, but for who they are.

A Break That Makes a Difference

Lachlan’s story highlights the heart of the Scottish Young Carers Festival, offering young carers a space where they can take a breather, connect with others who understand and have the freedom to just be themselves.

Looking Ahead

As the Scottish Young Carers Festival came to a close, one thing was clear: Lachlan wasn’t ready for it to end.

“I’d love to come back next year and make even more friends.”

We’d love to welcome him back and we hope even more young carers get the chance to experience what Lachlan did.

Help Us Celebrate Young Carers

Lachlan’s story is just one of many. But it captures exactly why the Scottish Young Carers Festival matters. It’s not just a few days away - it’s a chance for recognition, connection and joy.
