Young Carers Get the Break They Deserve at Scotland’s Biggest Young Carer Festival
The 18th Scottish Young Carers Festival came to a powerful close this week after welcoming over 500 young carers from across Scotland for three days of connection, fun and inspiration.
Hosted by Carers Trust Scotland at Scouts Scotland’s Fordell Firs Adventure Centre, the event received funding from the Scottish Government and brought together young carers for a well-earned break filled with creative workshops, live music, games and camping – all co-designed by young people themselves.
Celebrating 18 Years of Impact
Since launching in 2008, the Scottish Young Carers Festival has been a lifeline for thousands of young carers across Scotland, providing not only respite, but a space to be heard, seen and celebrated.
Why It Matters
There are an estimated 30,000 young carers in Scotland, many of whom face challenges in education, health and personal wellbeing. The Scottish Young Carers Festival aims to improve outcomes by providing fun, community and opportunities for decision-makers to hear directly from them.
Becky Duff, Director of Carers Trust Scotland:
" The Scottish Young Carers Festival is more than just a summer event, it’s a vital space where young carers can feel free to be themselves, connect with others who understand their experiences and have their voices heard. For 18 years, this festival has played a key role in recognising the incredible contributions of young carers across Scotland and reminding them that their wellbeing, aspirations and futures matter.”
A young carer that attended the festival this year said:
“I love coming to the Festival because I can have fun and be myself. It’s nice to meet other young carers and know I’m not alone.”
The Minister for Social Care and Mental Wellbeing, Tom Arthur said:
“It was a pleasure to take part in the Scottish Young Carers Festival, which every year goes from strength to strength.
“Hearing directly from young carers was invaluable, as it provided insights into how we can assist them not only in their caring responsibilities but also in achieving their future goals."
