Carers Trust calls for clarity on carer support following Welsh Government Draft Budget

Responding to the Welsh Government Draft Budget, Kate Cubbage, Director for Wales, said:

“Unpaid carers need assurance through this Draft Budget that services they rely on to maintain their health and wellbeing and to protect them from poverty will be there for them into the future.

"While we welcome the Welsh Government’s additional investment in the health and social care system for 2025-26, we don’t yet have clarity about how this Budget will support the 310,000 people in Wales providing unpaid care for family, friends and neighbours. Without the support of unpaid carers, the Welsh Government would need to double their health and care budget and find an equivalent of £10bn worth of care to replace their vital contributions.

"Carers Trust is calling for clarity around the future of the Short Breaks Scheme, the Carers Support Fund and investment in the local care and support services carers rely on. These programmes are no longer ‘nice to haves’ but are ‘must haves’ if we are to sustain our unpaid carers, who are themselves plugging gaps in the social care system and protecting our NHS.”

Wrth ymateb i Gyllideb Ddrafft Llywodraeth Cymru, dywedodd Kate Cubbage, Cyfarwyddwr Cymru:

"Mae angen sicrwydd ar ofalwyr di-dâl drwy'r Gyllideb Ddrafft hon y bydd gwasanaethau y maent yn dibynnu arnynt i gynnal eu hiechyd a'u lles, a'u hamddiffyn rhag tlodi, yno iddynt i'r dyfodol.

"Er ein bod yn croesawu buddsoddiad ychwanegol Llywodraeth Cymru yn y system iechyd a gofal cymdeithasol ar gyfer 2025-26, nid oes gennym eglurder eto ynghylch sut y bydd y Gyllideb hon yn cefnogi'r 310,000 o bobl yng Nghymru sy'n darparu gofal di-dâl i deulu, ffrindiau a chymdogion. Heb gefnogaeth gofalwyr di-dâl, byddai angen i Lywodraeth Cymru ddyblu eu cyllideb iechyd a gofal a dod o hyd i werth £10bn o ofal i gymryd lle eu cyfraniadau hanfodol.

"Mae'r Ymddiriedolaeth Gofalwyr yn galw am eglurder ynghylch dyfodol y Cynllun Seibiannau Byr, y Gronfa Cymorth i Ofalwyr a buddsoddiad yn y gwasanaethau gofal a chymorth lleol y mae gofalwyr yn dibynnu arnynt. Nid yw'r rhaglenni hyn bellach yn 'braf eu cael' ond mae'n ‘rhaid eu cael' os ydym am gynnal ein gofalwyr di-dâl, sydd eu hunain yn llenwi'r bylchau yn y system gofal cymdeithasol ac yn diogelu ein GIG."
