King's Speech focus on breaking down barriers to opportunity is welcome but carers must be included
Responding to the King's Speech, Carers Trust's CEO, Kirsty McHugh, said:
“We welcome the focus in the King’s Speech on breaking down barriers to opportunities and improving education."
"For the Government to achieve its aims, it’s essential this includes tackling the many barriers facing unpaid carers."
"As it stands, carers as young as five are being left unidentified, unsupported and unable to fulfil their potential. They’re in desperate need of increased support with their education."
"Meanwhile, adult carers are dropping out of the workforce because of their caring responsibilities and struggle to re-enter employment. They also need urgent help."
“With its legislative programme set, the Government must now outline urgently needed plans to improve the lives of the UK's seven million carers."
"As part of its commitment to enhancing employment rights, carers’ leave must be doubled to 10 days and paid."
"Another powerful way to show carers are a priority would be to introduce a UK-wide, funded carers strategy."
"Carers Trust looks forward to working with the Government on transforming the lives of carers across the next Parliament.”
