Young adult carers and employment rights (Northern Ireland)

CymraegEnglish

Carers of all ages in Northern Ireland have a legal right to ask their employer for flexible working if caring for an adult who is a relative or lives at the same address as them.

Working parents of children with disabilities (under the age of 18) have the right to request flexible working arrangements.

Carers also have the right to take unpaid time off work for dependants in an emergency.

Once in work you will also have contractual rights set out in your contract of employment. In some cases, these will be better than the legal minimum.

For more information on your rights at work, you can ask your local carers organisation or, if you are a member, a trade union. Some larger employers also have a staff welfare service who may be able to give advice.
