In our countdown to Christmas 2017, we took some time to reflect on how our partnership with the Rank Group supports carers across the UK. We highlighted different stories every day.

A lovely Christmas break for two

Jenny is 65 and cares for her husband Paul who has complex needs resulting from a stroke two years ago. Paul uses a wheelchair, is partially-sighted and needs support from Jenny in all aspects of daily life, including personal care, washing, dressing, feeding and administering medication.

It has been an incredibly difficult time for both of them and last Christmas they were both in desperate need of a break as Jenny’s health has also suffered since Paul’s stroke, and she had a heart attack earlier in the year. However, they have remained positive, with Jenny saying:

Our goal is to try and live life to the full and, against all odds, it’s happening. It would be wonderful to spend Christmas in a winter wonderland”.

Thanks to the fundraising efforts of Rank employees, Jenny and Paul were awarded £400 last year which allowed them to take a Christmas break in a hotel which offers additional support for people with disabilities. The couple benefitted hugely from this break and were able to “enjoy their time together as husband and wife and not as husband and carer”.
