Rhian's story
CymraegEnglish
Rhian is an older carer providing lifelong care for her adult son, Kevin, who is disabled. Rhian was struggling with essential bills and was extremely anxious and fearful about her financial situation.
Whilst attending a local community event Rhian was referred to Carers Trust Crossroads West Wales Money Matters project for unpaid carers. Rhian felt quite lost in the digital world and jumped at the chance of getting some “in person” advice.
Previously any benefits Rhian had tried to claim in the past had been declined or on one occasion she even ended up having to repay funds, which shattered her confidence and left her fearful of ever trying to apply for funding again.
With the support of staff at the Money Matters project Rhian applied for additional benefits. She was approved for Pension Credit Guarantee leading to an income boost of £3,268.
Additionally, she also gained access to other benefits such as Council Tax Discount, Warm Home Discount, Free TV License, Cost of Living Payment NHS Optical Voucher and Free Dental Treatment that offered needed relief.
The approval for Pension Credit also resulted in a lump sum payment and substantial yearly savings on household expenses. Leaving her all in all, over £10,000 better off.
