Date Revised:

This is a guide for young adult carers in England who want to get into work.

The guideGetting into Work: a Guide for Young Adult Carers in England gives you advice and information about how to overcome the difficulties you may face in finding and staying employment, how to find a job, the application process and how to speak to your employer about being a carer.

The employment rate for unpaid carers generally is 67% with over half of those who are not working saying that they want to work.

Finding and staying in employment

This guide is broken down into easy to read sections which gives you tips about completing applications and attending interviews, whilst also giving guidance on employment policies so you can request flexible working for example.

The guide was written following a consultation event with 22 young adult carers from across the Carers Trust Network, their support workers and four employers.

The content is based on what these young adult carers told us were the barriers they face in finding and staying in employment and their solutions. The guide is aimed at young adult carers but carers of any age may find it helpful, particularly if you are looking for work for the first time, have been out of work for a while, or if you are in work but looking for a new job.
