I am a carer for my father, i am getting carers allowance topped up by income support. I have no idea about what the limits are for if i want to work part time? how many hours can you work a week and is there a certain amount you can earn up to? also, if one starts to work part time, would the carers allowance continue and the income support stop? how do these things work?

Thu 7 Aug 2008 16:38You can work for up to £95 per week without it affecting your Carers Allowance. But you still need to inform Carers Allowance of any changes in your circumstances.
Income support is means tested so you will have that withdrawn unless your earning less than £20 per week. Again you would need to contact Income Support about changes in circumstances should you go out to work.
I would contact your local job centre plus for further information and ask them about a financial assessment in returning back to work. Also to find out what benefits you may qualify for if you where to loose your income support as you would still be on a very low income.

Sat 9 Aug 2008 10:22you may find that you might be able to claim working tax credits too. I agree with you, its mind boggling how the benefits system works. They give you something in one hand and they take something away from you in the other!!

Mon 18 Aug 2008 23:05Sorry to say but if you get income support you arent able to earn very much being on that unless you come off the income support you would be able to work part time and also earn up to around 90 pounds per week roughly ,Look into it through CAB they can help you there. But like I said you would no longer be able to get income support going out to work over a certain amount you can earn ,but wouldnt be worth your while ,Think carefully for income support covers you for dental treatment and other things like free glasses and so on check it out well before you dicide on what you want to do,and who will look after your father and what hours would suit you to work, you have to think all that to ok,hope this is some help to you ,caroline

Sat 23 Aug 2008 00:36The average earnings in GB are around £25k per annum.
Any carer who can should grab a job - any job. It might take a few years to work your way up the slippery pole, but it's a lot better than carers allowance. Don't look short term - look at where you could be in five years time.
