hi all
just thought you may like to know
We applied for a grant from the social for our child`s bedroom
Carpets, waterproof matters cover ,bedding, new bed ,and sheets,
Which were all in a bad state due to soiling !
we asked for £480 We went red in anger when we opened the letter they offered us £20 !
We appealed with an extra long reply attached
If you don’t ask you don’t get
we now have £440 !
hope this gives hope to all of you
the grants are there for all they just don`t like given them out
hope you have luck
bye bev & conner

They are like insurance companies offer a small amount first and only the fools take it, or refuse and say they will do without, because they are trying to get money for something they don't need it for. they just make more paperwork for themselves no wonder you have to wait a long time when you apply for something. Have you tried the family fund if your child has a disability they offer grants to families for all sorts of things from house hold items such as washing machines. tumble dryers, bedding to toys and holidays.

Website to check it out is:

www.familyfund.org.uk

Unfortunately this is subjected to low income families only but worth looking into to see if your able to put in an application.

There is a new scheme being ran through the family fund which offers discounts on holidays and house hold items but you need to apply for a card from them to be able to purchase these items with a discount.

In my experience you should apply for double the amount you need because they NEVER seem to pay the full amount you need Angry emoticon
I really resent the fact that some jobsworth in an office has the power to decide what my families needs are & if they see fit to give it to us Angry emoticon
I wouldn't have applied if it wasn't essential anyway!

Congratulations on your new award tho Bev & Conner Big grin emoticon Big grin emoticon

I would advise all parents who are caring for a disabled child to make sure they have everything they need for their child before they reach the age of 16 because once they reach that magic age there is no help from anyone when you have to adapt your house for them my husband is on a very low income and we have to find £8000 to adapt our kitchen for my daughter as social services say its not user friendly for her now she is partualy sighted but there are no grants avaliable because of her age so result is no help no kitchen

Who told you there are no grants?

Ask at your local carers centre also ask at Social services and CAB here in North Tyneside we have VODA which has the grant handbook stating every grant provider and the criterias for applying for funding. Ask about for this information as they will be someone out there who will be able to offer you some help towards the adaptations.

I do know of a case where a family had to carry their daughter up the stairs until she reached the age of 18. Then they were able to apply for a lift to be installed as the daughter was able to apply in her own rights. Had they installed a lift before the age of 18 it would of cost in the region of £25,000 which eventhough they were on a reasonable income it was a lot of money to have to pay for adaptations which they got installed for free once their daughter reached the age of 18.

So worth investigating a little further to make sure the information which you have been given up to now is fact or someone just trying to put you off from applying for what is rightfully available for your daughter.

Shaza this sounds like clap trap to me as one of my friends has a daughter aged nearly 18 and shes just had a bathroom and all sorts done.

You can write to the Social Fund and ask them to review the decision, it is standard practice for them to give a measly sum in the first offer. Your local advice centre should be able to help.
