charitable funds?

Does anyone know of any charities we can try applying to for some funds?

Son has Aspergers, and is nearly 8 years old. Husband has various disabilities, including fairly severe arthritis. We do not qualify for income support, so can not claim any of the government grants, but equally I only work 21 hours a week and the money barely keeps the family in food - there is certainly none spare for major purchases (there are two other children as well)!

We would really like to buy a mobility scooter for husband so that he can "walk" son to school rather than driving him each day as he currently does. We feel this is wrong in so many ways - but equally, school has explicitly stated that son must be accompanied to and from school.

Just wondered if anyone knows of any charities that may help?

Thanks.

Hello

If school has stated that your son needs to be accompanied to and from school I would make enquiries about transport to and from school; especially as your husband has a disability.

If you log onto grant net you can do this as an individual to look for funding for items you may require.

www.grantnet.com

But always check the funding criteria as it would be a waste of your time and the funders time if you apply for funds for which they don't fund for.

good luck

School said they would support an application for son to have a taxi to & from school - but that is even worse than husband driving him in my opinion. He needs to walk - for health, lifestyle, environment, independence and personal philosophy reasons Smile emoticon but he needs to be accompanied too... I'll look at that website now tho. Thanks

also you could contact your local carers centre of CAB (Citizen Advice Buea) and ask them if they know anyone who has access to a fund finder where they can provide you with funders who are out there who will fund what your looking for.

There seems to be more funders out there who are willing to fund for children's equipment.

You may be able to apply to the family fund for your son if your income is below the threash hold which they state on their website. Information will be on the following website

I second what Katew says, if both your son and hubby are entitled to DLA it can help in a number of things. Expecially with Motability schemes which include scooters

DLA can increase the applicable amount laid down by government went it comes to assistance with council tax and rent (if you are renting)

When applying for DLA, always state what it can be like on their worse days, after all this is when they may need help most

Thanks for the benefits replies, but yes, we do claim DLA for husband and son. Husband gets moblity but we use it for the car already. Son doesn't get mobility cos of his age. I can't get carers allowance as I work. I don't want the council to provide transport, as they just suggest a taxi. Anyway, there are two younger children that need to get to and from school too!

I will try the family fund, and keep scouring the local ad pages.

hi again kezt

i cant understand why you are not getting mobility for your son cus of his age? i KNOW you can get moibility for a child - i personally know of 2 people that do (dont deserve it but that another story) so i would definately ask dla to look into this.

there is also a community care grant - look on jobcentre website - i have put a claim in form them - still waiting but its worth a go!
