Respite Cost

Last year I went to Spain with my sister for two weeks. It's the first time my husband had gone into respite. I expected to pay something towards it but not £760. It was more than the cost of my holiday. They lost some of his clothes even though every item had his name on it. He goes to a day centre twice a week but nobody organised his transport. A couple of months ago I was away for four days & the cost for somebody staying overnight & coming in twice a day was over £300. Admititally I got a grant for the four day break but the thought of the cost of any future breaks puts me off going anywhere.

Re: Respite Cost
Fri 22 Aug 2008 11:51I know what you mean aztec!!
I find it unbelievable that we as 24/7 carers get £50 carers plus a little Income Support but the carers who look after our loved ones get that amount (and more!!) for a days work. As far as holiday funding-are you on Direct Payments? You can use any left over money from that to pay for respite and also my partner has ms and the ms society do help with funding for breaks etc -if your husbands condition has a charity it's worth approaching them for help.
good luck

Re: Respite Cost
Sat 23 Aug 2008 13:46Aztec. Your Husband would have had a financial assessment prior to him going into respite care. Everyone has to have one in order to establish what contribution can be afforded. My Mother had one & we know precisely what her contribution will be ( she has yet to take up the offer )..!
Some people pay next to nothing....ie £60-£70 a week others pay far more. Also if your hubby is over 65 & in receipt of attendance allowance I'm certain that is included in the figure.Good luck with sorting something out for the future....

Re: Respite Cost
Sat 23 Aug 2008 23:27Hi, we got 3 weeks respite built into our Direct Payment.
It means we no longer have to request funding if I want to get away for a few days as I can use it as and when I need to.I love D.P. when it works, it works really well.
