i have just had a letter this morning from british gas. It says that if you are in receipt of benefits (carers allowance included) then you can go on to a lower tariff called "essential tarriff" . I called them and asked them a few questions. Because the account is in hubbys name only, he has got to phone them up and get the account name changed to both of our names. When this is done, we can go onto the lower tariff. Its worth a shot i think.

Wed 20 Aug 2008 15:18Thanks for that Loopy just done it. For anyone not in receipt of a letter like me, then there is a freephone number, as its a long wait I just found out. Its-
0800 072 7100, and you need your gas and if you have electric then your reference number for that, off the bill

Re: british gas
Wed 20 Aug 2008 17:37I've done it too, we've got prepayment meters for gas and electric which cost more anyway so hopefully this tarriff will save a few pennies
talking about heating does anyone know anything about electric convector heaters? we can't afford to put central heating on so have had one of those halogen fires but the last couple have burnt out really quickly, was looking in the argos book and saw convector heaters which are 2kw and about 15-20 quid but i don't want to buy one then its no good - any advice before the big freeze

Re: british gas
Wed 20 Aug 2008 20:20the only thing i forgot to ask british gas is can i have the essential tariff on gas only or do i have to switch to electric with them too? Currently with Npower for leccy, its just more convenient and i have been with them for years. Hubby tried to get through to british gas when he got home from work, but it took ages. He said he is gonna phone them at work tommorow. I have got a prepayment for the electric. It probably cost alot more but its just more convenient for us, and we dont get hefty bills landing on the doormat! With the gas, i just pay a set amount every week but this is gonna change to every fortnight soon (so it says in my letter, thats not just for me either, its for everyone who pays their gas this way). I have a payment card that i use every week. sorry to waffle, i have had 2 large glasses of wine !!!

Wed 20 Aug 2008 20:25oh ginger, we had a convector heater for sons bedroom. They are really good and you can have settings on them. Even on the lowest setting it was quite warm. They dont cost that much to run either.

Re: british gas
Wed 20 Aug 2008 23:15Hi everyone, just wanted to say that i've been on essential tarriff with british gas for well over a year now. I have prepayment meters for both gas and electric. For the first 12 months i got a rebate every 3 months which was £12 on leccy but about £30 on gas. I got a letter after 12 months to say that my meters were automatically adjusted to the new low tarriff. I also got a letter last week saying that they were freezing the price of my gas till april next year so that i wouldn't have problems with heating during the winter!!! My daughters just applied for the essentials tarriff too!! Did you also know that if you have a water meter and have someone with a disability and you use more water because of it ( ie: because of bed wetting, frequent washing or baths etc) then you can get a reduction on your bill. I got a letter from yorkshire water letting me know.
Ginger, i got a convector heater for my dad last year and its brilliant. He has it on all the time during cold months and cus it has a thermostat it switches itself on and off and keeps his room at an even temprature all the time.

Re: british gas
Thu 21 Aug 2008 08:19It may not be a lot, but any saving is better than nothing. Nice to know that even a utility company can do what the government cant, and that is recognise just how tough it is for us to exist, I am dreading this winter, and wont have the heating on anyway, have a little gas fire and use just that. Its all the washing thats the problem, washing machine on every day, maybe my mom had a point and never had a washing machine until she retired. How on earth she coped I dont know, I am constantly exhausted anyway. Well have managed to get two nights respite as my son is getting married friday so something nice to look forward too (apart from the fact my ex will be there) still there is a down side to everything I suppose. Lets hope the rain hold off we can but hope.
