thomas the tank engine

I have a severely autistic 17 year old daughter who for the last 16 years has become fascinated with thomas the tank engine. She loves him so much that she carrys her toys around with her at all times and puts most of them under her pillow at night. After reading the national autistic society website, apparently thomas is a character that most autistic children can relate too. I was wondering if any other carer out there has come across this too? Drink emoticon Drink emoticon

Hi Loopy, Yes my son who is 20 and severly autistic also loves Thomas, He demands to go to a nearby steam railway station every single bank holiday, he KNOWS Thomas and all his friends are there, even the guy who drives thomas at the station knows him. I saw years ago about the NAS "adopting" thomas, but when you think about it - its logical - as the faces on the trains are SO very easy to read, and that is one of the major problems with autism, they cannot read facial expressions or body language, Thomas and friends make it so very easy for them.

Hi Loopy,
My grandson is 4 years old & he loves Thomas he has every single engine, & though he hasn't any speech if we say to him where's Bill,Thomas or any of the engines he knows exactly which one it is & will fetch it out of his toybox, I cant remember going through them all with him apart from when we bought them & then would say this one is Gordon etc. He has to take at least 6 when he goes anywhere & takes them to bed. Hi Lisa,
Yep Thomas all the way with Georgie! Although his main disability is Fragile x as you know, he is also autistic (mor ethan Sid) and has always loved Thomas and the gang, even now and he is 11.
Probably right about the facial expressions.

My great nephew (4) is autistic and Thomas is a favourite. We even had a story written for him round real events which had references to Thomas the Tank engine and his driver included in it.

Must admit, I enjoyed the stories too in my younger days, but Paddington Bear was and still is my favourite.

Take care
Meg

I've got very fond memories of Thomas and the brilliant narration from Ringo Starr. Happy days! Smile emoticon

My son has asd and was obsessed with thomas when he was younger, i honestly think that it is because its clear whats happpening, and the expressions are clear so they can pick up on the facial gestures and the commentary helps as when thomas is mad the commentator says thomas is mad.......so everything makes sense.
