workiing part time

I work 15 hours per week as I care for an old gent who is an added family member. He requires so much caring now at the age of 84. His mind goes back to war days and does not devulge in current affairs, I started looking after him in 2003 after his second stroke and did this unconditionally but this year he has required day to day caring and with having cellulitis on both legs i have been doing all his washing ironing and shopping as well as taking him to doctor s 3 days a week. Also i have a 70 year old husband who has diabetes and half the time is unwell, so i cannot see that i could work more than the 15 hours given in my workplace. However, I am not entitled to any credits well so i believe, and i have only in the past 3 months claimed for carers allowance as a big chunk was being taken out of my own income which left me with next to no income at all. How would one evaluate income support as my husband has basic pension and i earn between 75 and 90 per week, it is rather difficult to live on this kind of income. I would appreciate if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks bazshaz

Hi Baz
Cannot say I know all the ins and outs of it, but if either this man or your partner or in receipt of Attendance Allowance (Or DLA for under pensionable age people with disabilities) then you can bring home up to £95 pw as long as you are caring for 35 hrs pw or more (which it sounds like you are).
Assuming you are under pension age if you're still working?
I know it changes once you receive a pension.

The carers allowance is now £50.50 pw.
If you claim Income support, you will get less if you receive the carers allowance (wrong but that's the way it is) but you should still get it I would think.
As I said Im not an expert, and not too up to date with other issues like your Husband receiving a pension and so on.

Tricia probably knows more! She's omnipotent, bless her.

It maybe that you would be better off to stop work, although Obviously this gives you a break and a chance to mix with people, other than being a carer.

Dunno if this is any help. Smile emoticon

Kerry you have been a godsend thank you. Yes I would prefer working just a few hours because of the pressures as this old gent does have kids and they believe he is getting old and i should accept it, but as i was a publican some 10 years ago he gave me some sound advice which created a successful business and I in return am now caring for him because he just does not have the transportation and other company in the area and he is reliant, but the carers allowance is spot on, and i do thank you so much for your reply and consideration.and yes you have helped tremendously, thank you very much Smile emoticon Smile emoticon Smile emoticon

No problems Baz, I hope you get something sorted out for your self.
Dont forget in between caring you are an individual with your own needs too!
Have you had a carers assessment thru social services- this is your legal right and they may be able to get you some support and/or advice about your entitlements regarding income support etc.

thanks once again Kerry. I have taken everything on board here and i think i shall get an assessment so that i can also inform his children as to what i am involved with dealing with their father. Lovely of you to find the time to advise too. Thank you so much Smile emoticon
