Autism Alert Cards

I get well ticked off with the reactions my son gets off ignorant t#@~? when we are out. It's bad enough that he has to cope with the sights and sounds of the outside world without having people stare at him and have the sheer bloody nerve to tell me he needs a good slap. So i printed my own Autism Alert Cards that say; "The holder of this card has Autism and in times of stress may act inappropriately or may say things considered to be rude. This is part of his dissability and your patience and understanding is much appreciated.
Your intervention is neither needed nor wanted.
For more information visit the NAS web site." I do get some funny looks but honestly i dont give a plop, my son comes first, how he feels matters how they feel DOES NOT. yer get me!!

exactly EL
well bloody said hon.
i know of someone who made up A4 size posters that she would put on car windscreens that parked in disabled bays without badges...
it was something like
"youve got my parking space...
do you want my disability too?"i feel like doing a similar one but mine would say
"youve got my sons' parking bay
would you like my sons too"

Re: Autism Alert Cards
Tue 8 Apr 2008 01:44Hi EL
I got my son an Autism Alert Card from the NAS - he carries it everywhere with him.
The NAS also produce cards which state:
"This young person has autism"
"Autism is a developmental disability that affects social and communication skills,"
People with autism may behave in unpredictable ways as a result of their difficulty in understanding language and social situations."
"Please help us by being understanding and showing tolerance".
For further information contact The National Autistic Society
I have also had the muttered comments about little brats being out of control, etc - now I always carry a wad of the cards with me (they are only business card size) and just give one to anyone who makes a comment.
It isnt the childs fault other people can be so intolerant and make assumptions without knowing the facts.
If your son is anything like mine, the more comments, stares, etc, the more agitated he gets and the more unpredictable he gets = vicious circle!
Take care

Re: Autism Alert Cards
Tue 8 Apr 2008 09:48Fortunately I have only experinced one uneducationed memeber of the public who rattled my cage and it was when my son was about four years old (he is 16 now)
I was standing in a que in a well known catalouge shop waiting for our goods to be brought to the counter and had my Mam in her wheel chair and my son decided to throw a wobbler on the floor as he had no communiation back then and was not able to understand why we were waiting so long. Then came along this snooty Grandmar with her two year old son who was obviously a lot smaller than my over grown 4 year old and said out loud enough for the whole shop to hear that her grandson would never behave like that and went on to tell him he was a good boy. So Gobalmighty shoutted out and said, " Thank your lucky stars you don't face the same every day problems which I do due to my son not being able to talk and until you know the full facts keep your trap shut." The whole shop went deadly silent and I often still wondered if this made the staff produce our goods quicker than the rest of the customers waiting in the que!

Tue 8 Apr 2008 15:20ha tricia i had one once...
i was at digger land in kent and my youngest was playing with his willy (he was only about 3 at the time) so i said "siddie stop playing with your willy" and this woman gave me the most evil look and started tutting at me...

Re: Autism Alert Cards
Tue 8 Apr 2008 18:53one woman once said to me that charlotte needed a damn good slap. I told her, in front of a shop full of people, that it would be her that got the slap if she didnt keep her trap shut. Once my hubby was collecting for charlottes respite centre. He was selling raffle tickets. The guy in the next office told my hubby (who is not a man to be messed with really) that all disabled kids should be destroyed at birth. Hubby had to walk out cos he wanted to punch his head in. He said "I dont want to loose my job over that arrogant twatt'. But we were both absoloutly furious.

Tue 8 Apr 2008 19:18Well loopy your hubby is a better person than me i'd av kicked his effin ed in, but sometimes the best revenge is to do nout and let karma take over cause what goes around....... once on holiday at my sons fave Butlins Minehead 2 boys were openly laughing at Adam, my hubby( who never ever swears or speaks without being spoken to first) put his face right up to there's and growled "listen you effin freaks if you wanna see something really hilarious look in the mirror, now efoff b4 i kneecap yer" well i legged it out there quick cause they were only about 12/13. I was gobsmacked
at his reaction he's the most laid back person you could ever meet, still everyone has a cut off point dont they.
