first of all dan don't despair your not alone,if you go into shaws they sell waterproof matteress protector covers that go under the bottom sheet, you obviously have internet so please take a look at the gompels website they are a good company to deal with,i dealt with them when my hubby was alive.
also you should be entitled to help from dwp for new matteress.
get in touch with your local health board regarding personal needs for your dad, contact your local incontinence advisor at the hospital ask for a home assessment, for your dad.
i fought tooth and nail to get stuff, district nurses have access to alsorts of aids, even down to what they call t.bags. they are bags for urine bottles they solidify the urine so that if the bottle is spilt no urine comes out thus saving work, when the bottle needs emptying all you do is simple add normal tape water to it and it turns back into liquid which you then empty in the usual manner, but do they tell you about these things NO.
AS for your family they are like mine so you have nothing to thank them for. hope the info is of use to you.

forgot to add re:-furniture i used to use baby disposable changing mats to cover the seat of his chair and i would sprinkle a little scented talc over it , when disposing of the pads i would use the baby scented nappy bags from the pound shops then place it in a carrier bag, then into a bin with fresheners on the lid. for cleaning the furniture i used cheap car upholstery foam, then sprayed it with fabric softner it worked wonders and was inexpensive.

another hint to clean up the smell is bicobonated soda. It can be put into a small yoghurt tub and left on a shelf to absorb the smells and it can be left sprinkled on the carpet overnight and hoovered up the next day to eliminate smells in the carpet.

Bicobonated soda can be found in the baking isle in any supermarket and is a lot cheaper than the usual cleaners.
