Hi all, was wondering how you would all feel about giving tips on the cost of products from different supermarkets given the lack of funding the government have allocated to us? i work in Morrisons but more often than not shop in Tesco, i got 400ml of Dove body moisturiser for a little under £5, i go to work and pass one through the till at £2.80 (same size), i was peed off i can tell ya, also M's sell tooth picks with dentol floss for £1.50 but Wilkinson has them for 45p! sandwich bags 12p for 50 in wilkinson which is cheaper than the value versions, any bargains anyone ?

I never get all my weeks shopping from one shop for that very reason. The price difference between products can make a big difference between being able to afford to feed the family and not feed them.

There is a web site which you can check the costs of your items you get in your weekly shopping and it suggests which shop is the cheapest that week. Only problem is I have forgotten the name of the website. Lot of good I am!

But I have started to use Sainsburry's basic washing powder it is just over £1.50 for a huge box and the kids have not noticed any difference. I have also started to put the washing on the cooler wash too as this saves a considerable amount in electricity too. I think the trick is to use a fabric conditioner I usually get one which is on a special offer rather than sticking to one brand. The same goes with most of my shopping it always seems to go with the flow of what is on offer rather than what we would like to have in.

Maybe the web team could set up a thread for carers to contribute towards on hints and tips in surviving financially especially as we already are living on the bread line and now we are heading towards the scrimp and scrape line!

Makes me laugh when people are on the tv advising you how to live on a low budget when most of us carers have been doing that very thing for years!

PS my kitchen ceiling came down this morning great start to the week!

What my Dad told me many years ago springs to mind while reading this thread.

Why make the fat man richer by paying more when you can get it cheaper else where. That is exactly what happens when we pay more for a product that we could get for less else where.

A handy hint while I try to put into practise which my Dad often use to say is if you see something and you are tempted to buy it as a spur of the moment buy walk away and then if you will decide if you really do want it or was it just a whime and if you do go back and it's gone well you weren't meant to get it or it would still be standing there for you. I have been doing this a lot more lately especially with the cost of living rising so rapidly; am still as broke as ever but it does help a little bit.

I too love the £ shop but often find I buy more than I need so try to go in with just a fiver in my purse or set myself an amount I am going to spend put that money in my pocket and then I can't go over my set budget.

The cinema card is worth it's weight in gold in our house as my son loves going to the pictures and it means two of us can go along for the price of one person. I have also noticed some cinema's charge as little as £1 on a Sunday morning showing which is a good enough reason to keep off the drink on a Saturday night.

www.mysupermarket.co.uk

it only does the main 4 but Aldi, Lidl, and Netto normally do some decent offers. I use Wilkinson's & home bargains. I always look for bargains. I use the £ shop as well but found I could save another penny on some things at home bargains Devil emoticon

i am permanantly broke !! I use my local "home bargains" shop for things like cleaning sprays, loo rolls, tea bags, coffee, biscuits, crisps, etc etc. Then i go to tescos and get the rest of the stuff, and i try to buy the cheapest or whats on offer at the time. Nine times out of ten i always buy there value range as i think it is just as good. I cannot use their value washing powder as it is useless and really plays the kids skins up something rotten (hubbys too). I use the value fabric conditoner though. I try to do a meal planner as well for each week. Tonight we have had pasta bolognase and there is tons left over for tommorow. I always buy in bulk for things like potatos and veggies as i use lots of them in the week.. I always buy the value bread as well. My kids never starve and are always well fed with the value brands. They take sandwiches to school each day cos it would just be ridiculous money to give them dinner money every day. Smile emoticon Smile emoticon Drink emoticon
