What a fab place this is.
I have an autistic 8 year old . He was diagnosed at 2.5 years old. He is doing lots of new things. A few days ago he was playing football with his daddy in the garden - a very priceless moment .
Look forward to meeting you all.

Re: Hello - who else has a child with autism?
Sat 12 Jul 2008 17:23Hello Forbsay
I am also a mother of a teenager with Austim and learning disablities. I always thought it was moderate learning disabiltiies until recently when things have become very confused for him and his concentrations levels have done down hill a lot. I am putting it down to transition as he is due to leave his school which is a speical school and he is going to a speical sixth form college in september this year..
I also have two older children who are still at home. I keep threatening that I am going to ask if I can have independant living accommodation and leave this lot at home!
Hope you can make it into the chat room in the evenings would be great to catch up and chat about the positive sides of our children
take care

Re: Hello - who else has a child with autism?
Mon 14 Jul 2008 10:01Hi. I have 2 children with ASD aged 14 and 8. My daughter was not diagnosed until she was 12 which meant that she went through primary school with the label of being a pain in the bum as she was always the one sitting at the back chatting and disrupting others. We know now that this was due to her not understanding what the teacher was on about half the time as she has since had speech and language assessments which have shown that her comprehension is very poor. My son is 8 and was diagnosed at the age of 4. He is further along the autistic spectrum than his sister and has begun to struggle at school. His teacher has told us that he would really benefit from an educational statement (our daughter already has one) but the school are digging their heels in and giving us a load of old tosh about budgets etc. I worry about him going to a mainstream secondary school as our daughter did and was bullied severely as kids there thought that she was 'a bit weird'. As his problems are on a greater scale than hers I think that he will get eaten alive. Hi to all the mums and dads with children with ASD, and hope to chat to you all soon xx

Re: Hello - who else has a child with autism?
Tue 15 Jul 2008 02:08Hello.
I am a mother of a young man who will be 15 on the 25th July this year. My son was diagnosed at the age of 2 so we had a good start with things.
My son has been in the catholic system for his education with teacher's aid support for primary school since starting high school he now goes to a college that has a support unit. The only one run by the catholic system over here. They are just wonderful with Thomas supporting him and continuing his education.
I knew Thomas would not cope in the mainstream high school you should look at what units are available in your area.
Our goverment over here is only just starting to set up free services for kids with autism. I have alway had to pay for anything Thomas needed. Which is hard when you are a single parent and have an older normal child to support and educated as well. (Thomas has an older sister 18).
I think problems we face here in Australia are very much the same for you over there.
Take care
