My son is now 16 he will be 17 this November and I have just experienced what I have been told is a normal day for years.
He is in respite. Saturday my daughter and I went into town we were going to walk along the quayside and go to an art gallery but we changed our minds last minute and went shopping after all it is a woman's proagative!
We had lunch and then went for icecreams and just did what we wanted something we could never of done had my son been with us as he needs to have everything preplanned we in advance.
I just want to shout from the rooftops that at long last I think I have experienced what everyone tells me is normal.
Oh then meet up with friends and went into town for the night and had a briliant time

Re: normal day
Sun 27 Jul 2008 18:32Glad you discovered 'normal' Tricia. I'm lucky enough to remember normal and to still get some occasional me time - although you're never really free from your role as a carer.
I have just returned from three days away.
During a twilight walk on the beach on the first night I got a call from the overnight carer to say she didn't know what to give mum for breakfast and mum couldn't tell her ..... which is why I left a HUGE and detailed note for her.
Next day at breakfast got a call from the morning carer to say the overnight carer had given mum the wrong tablets ..... despite the HUGE and detailed note ....... aaarrrrggghhhh.
Then on the last day - while playing pitch and putt - I got a call from the care agency to say that the teatime carer had let herself in and mum wasn't there! Phoned the Day Centre in a panic to find out what had happened - fearing the worst, like you do - and they'd taken her to Brighton for the day!
Hope you get to do more 'normal' before your son comes home.

Re: normal day
Mon 4 Aug 2008 16:54That sounds about right for the paid carers and professionals to behave like that. I had two nights respite, and had 6 phone calls , in the end I didnt answer the phone and went out. She came back and they had let her eat and eat and eat. 6 weetabix sugar and full cream milk and toast for breakfast. Goodness knows what else she had, because I had to call a doctor out, as she wont go in the surgery. She was totally constipated and bloated she looked 9 months pregnant. They wouldnt say "no " to her and despite a detailed care plan by me they ignored it. Now she wont clean her teeth. I despair why are these people paid so much ,all they do is make their own lives easy.

Sat 9 Aug 2008 23:08go for it EL you deserve it mate.
Alice, we just came back from cornwall, liskeard, absolutely fantastic week, me him and the boys.
Lovely little cottage on a small site, so very calm and quiet, took boys out all day everyday and then wind down in the evening which you cant do at haven where we normally take them.
wouldnt bother with landsend though! very touristy and commercialised but I loved Looe, and padstow. but i love all cornwall anyway- wish i could afford to live there lol.
the weather was great too.
the boys had tantrums cos they didnt want to come home!have a lovely time. and i hope the weather stays good for you.

Mon 11 Aug 2008 21:55hope you have a fab time EL. You deserve it babe!! we aint going anywhere this year due to having drive done ( hubby doing it himself cos he i too tight to pay anyone, cant say i blame him really). Bloody televison is on the blink too
. Looked online for cheapest offers and nearly passed out at the prices. Its cos its all going digital soon and most of the "old" style tv's are being phased out. Dont know why its all going digital cos there is nothing but a load of old s**t on anyway!!

Tue 12 Aug 2008 09:57Thanks guys
yeah we will have a fab time we always do
we have been going the Minehead since 1996, its beautiful down there the Butlins side of things is for Adam i love the excursions
two weeks in a 3 bed log cabin cost £800 and it sleeps 8, to book with the resort would cost£460 per person for standard accommodation, i have saved £150 in Tesco stamps over the year so our food and drink is all paid for so all we need really is the sun to shine
oooh i cant wait

Tue 12 Aug 2008 10:24Nice one EL, it's nice to get away sometimes. Dont forget what I said about the tesco vouchers- my mate text me last week, she's just taken her two youngest to london, stayed in marriot hotel with vouchers (Free), free tickets for madame tussards, loads of other stuff, but she jokingly moaned about having to pay for grease tickets lol.
Alice, we didnt go to that chippie, but we had a lovely boat ride there, on 'The Girlfriend', and the driver let the boys drive which made their week, and there was this huge tame seal that came right up to the boat which my siddie loved too, also we had a cream tea there, yummy!
the best bit was that we bought the holiday off ebay for £206 in an auction, should have been £460 for this lovely cottage that slept 8 (inc the sofa bed). we bought it late thursday night and went very early sat morning!Lisa we are trying to get our conservatory done now, he can do all brickwork (cos in his past life he was a builder) but its still loadsa money, so im trying to sell my car but have paid over £100 advertising and no luck- no ones got any money.
Im selling it for over a thousand less than what its worth too!
Bloody pain it is.
