Action for Carers needs to be taken now before Mass suicide occurs

What a national head line that would make.
Do you think anyone would read it?
Doubt it unless they are faced with that themselves.
What is worrying is that Carers are being faced with the threat of the unknown. The massive consultation which took place last year saying that carers were being listend to and been recently published has shown no real evidence of what carers have been shoutting out for a very long time.
Yes, we need respite but those in need are not seeing any action being taken!
Yes we need a realistic income. Yet, we are being given no reassurance that we are going to get a realistic income. We are told nothing only rumours of benefits being cut and no replacements to take their places.
If and I have always said that the word If should be a long difficult word to say; but IF Carers are faced with a cut in their income and it does not take a lot of working out a lot of carers are going to become ill due to the stress which they will face. Then it will mean a lot of carers won't feel as if life is worth living for.
Are they trying to take us back in time and think if they can get rid of carers then they will say it is not their responsiblity to look after our Carees?
It does make on wonder.
We are constantly fighting to get what the person we are caring for needs to just have a basic life and then we have to fight for what we need....... Then the threat of obsticales put in our way it only makes you wonder if this consultation which took place last year did what it said it was meant to do.
Listen, learn, take action and don't ignore us!

Wed 23 Jul 2008 15:54I think you are right and nobody will listen and then when it happens everyone concerned looks so surprised. Several times this year I have felt so low that suicide sounds the best way out, but then I would have to do away with my caree too because would you leave them in the hands of untrained workers, uncaring social workers and no care facilities that I would put a wild animal in. Talk of third world poverty we live it too does anybody notice or care.

Re: Action for Carers needs to be taken now before Mass suicide occurs
Thu 24 Jul 2008 15:42It has happened Tricia and there will be more, suicides not the mass ones. Carers driven to distraction by the complex rules and regulations; the lies and deceits.
Skimming through a parliamentary reply I got the distinct impression that care and carers had been lumped into a single category; the R S being added as a sop. My reading tell me that far from X amount of money going to carers that money is going to care via P C Ts where a percentage will go on admin costs at each and every stop along the way. There are lies; damn lies and Government figures.

Thu 24 Jul 2008 17:09My partner tried to kill himself last year by jumping off a bridge - he was so depressed and in despair at the lack of support for our Autistic sons and fear for their future that he hadn't slept for weeks and was out of his mind. He survived and is now a paraplegic. Still no support or help but the only way to deal with it is to stop hoping for or expecting it.
All governments are **holes and always will be!

Thu 24 Jul 2008 22:34I wonder if anyone from the goverment ever reads anything on this site? Considering the amount carers there are we should be able to force things to improve. I am going to have a deep, deep think about this one there must be a way to improve our lot. Thinking hats on folks

Re: Action for Carers needs to be taken now before Mass suicide occurs
Fri 25 Jul 2008 22:47We are not getting the help or extra money we deserve.Do not lose hope. These last few months carers have been brought to the attention of the public through the tv and media. This is down to the fact that we are shouting and the government are hearing, but still a long way to go before we are given what we deserve. We need to keep on shouting. Remember how long it took women to get the vote, equal pay etc. We must keep chipping away not just for ourselves but for carers of the future as well. I do not consider suicide an option, as my caree needs me,even though sometimes I feel so trapped I want to scream. Yes life is tough, but I care for love,I think they know that and things like going on strike are beyond us. The carers sites are invaluable to bring us all together, and together we support each other and plan our next move to make are so called government very uncomfortable.

Sat 26 Jul 2008 08:52Dont feel alone Fenlander I dont think the majority of SS have heard let alone comprehend autism. Afet over 50 years experience, they still refuse to listen to me and still Know best (NOT) or think they do after a few years of reading books and taking exams. Oh that I had the time and money to do these exams what a breeze. Although having said that then they would think I was talking utter c***. It is so frustrating. I think we are an embarrassment to any government and that is why we are ignored.
Yes we care for love, but that doesnt feed us, clothe us, keep us warm in winter, transport us, help us when we are at our wits end and nobody is there. I dont know if any politicians bother to read this site, one wonders if the patron ever reads it. No wonder suicide comes to our minds so frequently, it comes from the utter despair because of the apathy of those who should be looking after our welfare and dont bother.

Re: Action for Carers needs to be taken now before Mass suicide occurs
Sat 26 Jul 2008 23:31I am all for the abolition of SS by fair means or foul! One of our local towns - Boston- has turned off all the traffic lights and everyone decides amongst themselves when to go or stop! You'd think it would be chaos but it actually works much better. So I think we should campaign to close down SS for a trial period of say 3 months and then survey all of us to see whether we notice any difference [ obviously not because there is nothing to lose] and then abolish the service[sic] and use the money to pay carers a fare wage for the job we do.

Sun 27 Jul 2008 02:25oh I would love to be paid a fare wage!
But please don't take my social worker away I am one of the lucky ones she listens to me and I do get action taken!
I think she should teach all social workers how to listen to all us carers and react the way she does.
Or is it I have a big gob and a scary face?
