Congratulations to ASDA

As from this coming Monday ASDA are going to fine £60 to those who abuse the disabled bays. At long last something is being done about those who abuse disabled parking bays. When my mother was alive being able to use the disabled parking bays helped towards in releaving the stress which I faced as a carer when we went shopping.

Lets hope that other private carpark follow in the footsteps of ASDA in issuing fines to those who abuse disabled parking bays.

Oh and all the money raised from the issues of the fines are being donated to baby charity Tommy's and the Motability car scheme for the disabled..... great publicy tactic I know but at least it is going to some good use and not being ploughed back into the pockets of the top bosses of ASDA

This doesn't surprise me in the least - here in Liverpool ASDA are the ONLY supermarkey actually DOING anything about this problem. Sainsburys pay lip service ONLY (and do NOTHING) while Tesco - TO THEIR ETERNAL SHAME!!! - say "We can't do anything - it's a police matter, you have to contact them"

THIS IS TOTALLY INCORRECT!!! And that's from Merseyside's Chief Constable, BTW ....!!

Guess where we do most of our shopping anyway .......

Hello Bagheera

I think Liverpool was one of the pilot areas for ASDA.

When Mam as alive I once asked a manager at a well known supermarket what their policy was on misuse of disabled spaces. Only to be told for the safety of our staff we don't say anything............................... I replied what about the safety of the disabled person while in your car park. They were unable to reply

I hope all other supermarkets follow suit like ASDA especially Tescos and Morrisons. The amount of people who abuse disabled parking spaces is apalling. Have these people any idea what it is like for a disabled person? I take my mother shopping at Tescos at Newport in South Wales and neally all the bays are taken up by non disabled people.

I hope so too for those who need them. I am fortunate that I don't require them these days. However, I try to park as close as I can to a path so I don't have to worry too much about my son's safety; he has no time concept on how far away a car is and when it is safe to cross the road but is abled body.

When Mam was alive if there were a lot of cars in the disabled parking bays I would check to see if the blue badge was on show. If not and the person was getting out of their car I would just remind them that they had forgot to put it up as many of them did look fine to be able to walk but you can never judge a person from just a few steps as they maybe having a good day in being able to take those extra few steps. Also why should anyone judge someone who is able to have the odd day where they can regain just a few moments of the freedom to be able to move.

I knew of someone who looked fine one moment but the next they would drop at any time. As it happens this did happen while they were out shopping but they did manage to regain their sense of humour by asking the staff to get their shopping as that is what they went into the shop to do and they were not leaving with out it. I am pleased to say the shop was very co operative and did every thing they could to make this person as comfortable as they could at the time.

And yes Andrew I do look forward to other shops in introducing this system to their disabled parking bays too..

hi all, Well were just back from our shopping at the local Tesco and ca't believe it we got a ticket on the car as were parked in the disabled bay someone saw my husband leave the car alone and is able bodied and talk about jumping to conclusions. By time he found myself and muminlaw who is wheelchair bound we had a ticket. There was no other place he could park for her she IS disabled. Don't get me wrong i think its about time they started checking those that should and shouldnt be there but get it right.
Rant over at least it looks like other supermarkets anre taking notice and folowing suit well donre to them

E-mail received today from Tesco:

[quote] I am sorry you are unhappy that some inconsiderate customers do park where they are not entitled to do so.

This is very inconvenient to customers like you.

I have spoken to our Management team in store who are working hard to discourage inconsiderate driving in our car park. They will continue to do so.

Unfortunately we cannot guarantee to eradicate this practice but will as I have said try to encourage considerate driving at all times. [end quote]

All that's missing is a "Signed, Pontius Pilate" at the end Angry emoticon

(in other words, "I wash my hands, I am innocent..........")

The only way that you are going to stop able bodied customers abusing disabled bays is to follow suit like ASDA and to issue a £60 fine. What other ways are your management team going to stop inconsiderate parking in your car parks?

Grrrr Angry emoticon this is something that really pees me off too- having 2 young boys severely mentally disabled- I have actually approached people and said "If you want my bay, do you want my kids too?" that usually embarrasses them into moving! Big grin emoticon
However, a few years ago, when i had all 4 kids with me, I parked in a bay, in asda, showing my orange badge (as they were then) and some bloke actually grabbed my arm and shook me, (i was holding my youngest at the time while the other one ran off across the car park) and shouted at me to move as they obviously were not disabled!
Luckily the head security bloke who I knew, came out then, and called the police for assault!!! the police then followed the bloke all round the store making him very uncomfortable!!! he he.
But i often get dirty looks for parking in disabled bays. These bays are not just for people in wheelchairs, my boys are very capable at walking... and running... very fast, they have no sense of danger and throw the doors open, usually almost hitting other cars, so we need the extra space. When they were smaller i needed it to help them in and out etc too.
I just wish more people didnt always assume one needs to be in a wheelchair to be classed as disabled!
Roll eyes emoticon
