hi everyone
I have just joined this forum and was basically after some help. I moved back in to my mums house with my wife so my wife could look after her. After a few months my wife applied for carers allowance but was refused because my mum was on the lower rate od DLA. My mum the re-applied and was granted the higher rate mobilty component of DLA and the middle rate care component for DLA so now my wife will be eligible to claim so she sent off the forms. Now my mum keeps getting strange letters from the pensions and benefits agency asking her how much I earn (son) and how long we have been living there and so on. My mum is claiming pension credit guarantee credit.
Will they cut off her benefits if my wife gets carers allowance?
if my wife claims will my mum lose out? or will she only lose out on the extra she has recently been getting because she is now on the higher rate DLA? This i understand will be fair enough but will she lose more money and get less than what she was getting before i moved in with her???
plz help
many thanks in advance

Re: benefits
Sat 27 Jun 2009 09:25I don't think there's anything strange about the letters she's receiving. They will need to establish your Mum's full circumstances, which will include everyone living with her I should think.
You don't want to rely on information from us or indeed any forum as all our situations are different, you really need to talk to the experts in this field - either Welfare Rights or CAB.

Re: benefits
Sat 27 Jun 2009 11:06I think you need a benefits expert.
But my understanding (and I'm definitely not an expert!) is that the carers allowance is for the person doing the caring and so shouldn't affect anything else your mum is getting. But what might make a difference to your mum's entitlements is what the household income is, which I think is why they're asking about your stuff. I would check it out with the CAB or someone else independent.

Re: benefits
Sun 28 Jun 2009 02:07thanks for your replies. I will go and see someone at the CAB. I assume my mum will lose out on her council tax benefit because I am living with her now, so she (or I ) will have to pay council tax. Anyway, will go and see CAB
Thanks everyone
