Working part-time and being a Carer?

I am currently employed in a school as a Teaching Assistant (part-time) My mother's health has not been good for sometime, she is 79, lost her partner last November. I visit her everyday and help with things she is unable to do in the home as well as take her to Dr/hospital appointments. Recently she has had a problem with her legs. She awoke one night a couple weeks ago to go to the bathroom. After a slight struggle sitting up in bed, as she tried to stand up, her legs wouldn't support her. She crawled to the bathroom, it took her roughly 20 minutes to get there and it's only a couple strides from her bedroom! I take her shopping now also, as she is concerned that this might happen again when she is out.
I am considering being a Carer to my mother, but unsure if I will be able to continue my present employment?
Are there Carers who are employed outside of caring for a parent?

Sorry to hear about your mum and I can understand the problems that you may encounter in becoming a carer as well as working on a part time basis.
The first thing that you need to think about if you have not already is Attendance Allowance for your mum. You may already be getting this.
You will them be able to claim Carer's Allowance and if you do get the allowance, you are able to earn £95 per week in your current job.
What you have to consider is can you continue working along with looking after your mum.
Myself, with the job that I was doing which was working in the evening as a carer and working everything round my wife but for me this got difficult as I worked 4 days on and 4 days off between 4 & 11 in the evening and I would get home to find that my wife had not eaten what I had prepared for her.
This was despite the fact that she was diabetic and had to eat regularly.
When she ended up in hospital for 25 days almost loosing her life that I decided that I should look after her on a full time basis.
Best advice that I can give you is to speak to somebody from either CAB or Welfare Rights in your area and they will be able to tell you which way to go.Hope this is of help to you.
