I can't imagine what your feeling like right now but I just wanted to say I'm so sorry. If y it makes you feel any better I know soemone who got it and it wasn't as dramatic as Lesley Ash - there are different strains of it and hopefully Ian has a mild form thats easily treated.

Sorry to read about your hubby, mine nearly died 3 1/2 year years ago with a asthma attack, he got MRSA on his skin whilst in intensive care, that was treated and it cleared up. He was in ther 45 days and then was put on a normal ward where he caught it again because of poor nursing, cleaning etc but this time he had it in 2 different places, one being his traci site as it was often left uncovered when I was not around, which was not much apart from overnight. I took in anti bactracia wipes, kept the sides cleaned, made sure everyone including me used the hand wash. I was told that something like 4 out of 10 have this on them at all times but it only attacks when you are poorly so hopefully all will be well with your hubby after what he has recovered from. Ask to see the infection control nurse as well, they should be able to advise you. I know I was washing his clothes apart from mine with dettol and was told it was a waste. Once he was semi fit enough because of poor standards, I took him home to care for him, still with MRSA on him.

Good luck, thinking of you.

Dear Kate
I am so sorry to hear hat our husband has contracted MRSA especially afer all he has been through.
I hope this is of help to you. My Dad for whom I am the sole carer contracted MRSA in August 2001 after an operation to remove his Gall Bladder. The hospital never admitted that he had MRSA but I found out because a work colleague was a pharmacy student working the summer in our office. She told me to get the names of the drugs my father had been given and she would tell me what they were for. I did this and she told me that was the drugs for MRSA.
My father fully recovered. He was 76 when he had this operation (one of many he has had). In 1993, 8 years before this operation he had had a serious heart operation and this summer he had had a pacemaker put in. From 2001 until this summer he was in fairly good health. Since May 2008 we have had some problems not connected to the MRSA, but now at the age of 83 he came through the pacemaker insertion without any problems with MRSA.
I do hope that all will go well with your husband and that he gets over his MRSA.
Best wishes and thinking of you,
Beth

Dear Katew, I am so very sorry for the trouble you are going through. To save typing it out again, I would refer you to our similar plight which is under the heading ''rules for live in carers'' I do not know where you are but if he is in the JR you have my undying sympathy. My husband caught a chest infection in a nursing home for respite while we were having building work because the attic tank burst and soaked everything - right up to the apex of the roof - and they did not treat him but sent him home early and he was too infectious for the GP who sent him tot he JR. Well he recovered from that in 2 weeks (admitted 27 feb) but was moved to level 7 and caught more infections. They did not tell us. Something was wrong, we knew that, but it was in June that they said he proved pos. for C Diff, then suddenly told us he could not swallow. He lost so much weight it is unbelievable. The neglect was awful. They gave HIM a gastrostomy feed. Now when they wanted to do that I had a sneaking feeling that that was going to be the answer to the government's concern about weight loss in hospital patients, esp elderly and I was furious. My husband had never, ever in his life lost his apetite or been unable to swallow. That operation gave him MRSA but we did not know until July. In August a doctor casually mentioned pulmonary embolism and when I asked when he said May 2!! My daughter and I have complained bitterly and we do not know whether the NHS home care funding is going to happen or not. I have not found anyone who has heard of it. Perhaps it will be cheaper than compensation. When we learned that he had had C Diff in the ward, with his vistitors and the other men and their grandchildren all at risk from these spores we were really worried.
LAST MONTH THERE WAS A REPORT THAT MRSA WAS DECLINING. DON'T BELIEVE A WORD OF IT. THEY ARE SIMPLY NOT INCLUDING LESS THAN 4 IN THE FIGURES EACH MONTH. Please keep in touch and let me know what is happening. You have a friend - not that I can do much, but I can read what you write and it helps to write.
