prescription charges !!

went to docs today (for myself) and he gave me a prescription with 2 items on it. The price is digusting., no wonder we cant afford to be ill. I have to pay for my prescriptions because carers allowance is the only benefit that i claim. I personally think that carers in receipt of carers allowance should not have to pay. I dont claim income support so i cannot avoid prescription charges.
I think i will have to wait until i am at deaths door before i go to the docs again !!

Re: prescription charges !!
Wed 24 Sep 2008 15:15hi Loopy I agree the charges for a prescription is disgusting but in some circumstances it is a good thing but as you said for carers maybe this could be free / discount say pound etc maybe this is something carers could highlight but it needs looking into or maybe its already being considered etc ?
I don't think you will have to be at deaths door before going to a docnext time you are ill lol but the cost I understand why you said it all the best coffeex

Wed 24 Sep 2008 15:55Lol Loopy, I have not had any meds for months now, i dont even get carers allowance, we just have my DLA and Jonathans DLA and thats it, both mine and jonathans prescritions came to over £50 a month, i took the decision to stop all my meds, i cannot stop jonathans, his is to keep him alive, mine are to reduce symtoms, so mine went. i have not had any adverse effects from stopping, although my vision is now worse, shakes are worse, and the spacticity in my legs are pretty severe. these things i can put up with, having said that, it is a poor state of affairs when carers like yourself cannot afford to get meds when they need them, false economy really, if you come down really ill then it costs more to hospitalise you and hospitalise the caree - they need to start thinking more about carers needs and how to keep the carer healthy and well! xx

Re: prescription charges !!
Wed 24 Sep 2008 20:37You should get yourselves a pre-payment certificate. It's only £27.85 for 3 months or £102.50 a year. As many prescriptions as you need. Anyone that requires more than 4 a month would be better off getting one......You can even pay for them monthly....You would save a bomb. Details of pre-pay are all on the back of your prescription form. It's great...It's what I did before I was 60 & had to pay........You can even sort it out on line.
If you live in Wales it's free anyway & if you are over the border in Scotland it is being phased out in stages.....Otherwise do yourself a favour & get a pre-payment certificate pronto & save your dosh......You ceratainly don't need to spend £50 + a month...If you do this it's only £8.54 a month on the annual one.......Hope this helps.........

Re: prescription charges !!
Thu 25 Sep 2008 10:49I'm not sure if this applies to anyone but does everyone know that if you are classed as "housebound" and need constant assistance if you go out you qualify for free prescriptions?? My partner is eligable even though he is on high rate mobility/care and gets incapacity benefit. It makes me so cross to hear people saying they are putting their helath at risk due to not being to afford medication. This is like a third world country and the government need to sit up and listen and help those in need not just keep lining their own pockets with money
sorry rant over but seriously if you think you might qualify just mention to your gp who will be able to do the exemption certificate form for you.

Re: prescription charges !!
Thu 25 Sep 2008 15:10thanks for all your replys. I dont think that we would be able to claim anything though because carers allowance is the only benefit that i claim. We dont qualify for anything else, not even child tax credit now (although that is going to appeal at the moments due to the silly buggers overpaying us after we told them half a dozen times that things had changed). Anyway, it was just a little rant at the price of the prescriptions. Think i may try over the counter remedies in future.
