ASD Traits...........

My youngest son, who is almost 10, has been going through assessment for Asperger's for over a year. I believe he has a mild-moderate level of Asperger's. However, at our last appointment, the consultant decided that my son was too reciprocal for a full blown diagnosis but has to be treated as a person with Autistic Spectrum Disorder Traits........... A copy of the decision was sent to school so hopefully, he wont get into half as much trouble as primary school (he's just started middle school)......... anybody else had a similar 'diagnoses'?

Yes, you really need to kick up a fuss about such an ambiguous diagnosis or you won't get the help you or he needs. This could also affect any benefit entitlements and other help you are eligible for.

Insist on a second third and fourth opinion with a specialist in this particular field... Also make contact with the national Autistic Society. If you are not already doing so.

I would ask for a second opinion I know it won't be easy.

I originally was told that my son has server learning disabilities and autistic triats. In my view we all have some autistic traits but are not classed as being on the Autistic Spectrum. When I eventually got a second opinion it was agreed as I said all along that he is Autisitc and has learning disabilities which showed signs of being server.

Also when you get a diagnoses don't let them leave you alone. Insist that you are given direction on who is going to be involved in your child's life. Many parents find that once diagnoses has been given that they are just left to get on with things. The whole point of a diagnoses is so you know where your working from and who to get involved in your child's life in order to make sure they are gettting the best.

What a crock Angry emoticon no doubt we who have kids on the AS have all been told our kids have Autistic traits! the point is having Autistic traits is not a diagnosis in its self, don't let them fob you off and don't accept this as a formal diagnosis Yes emoticon do your own research if you have too and show them they can't pull the wool over your eyes. Good luck

Thanks everybody!! I'm glad it's not just me who has little faith in the 'system'............ at the moment, he seems to be ok at school, which is where he has issues.....i find him fine to cope with but then again, it's probably coz i understand him, who he is and what he is about! Thanks for all your messages, i shall push again!! Drink emoticon
