Hi, this is my very first time on a discussion board. So if I am not any good at it please excuse me whilst I get the hang of it. I think there may be some people out there who did not know that when a person has dementia they are exempt from paying council tax. You have to get a form from the council and take it to the persons doctor to be filled in. We did for my mother and were successfull. Hope this helps someone.

hi Sofie does exemption from paying CTAX apply in all areas or certain parts in the country ? As my mom has a mild form of Dementia and she pays CTAX wouldn't the council have told us if she was exempt or is left to individuals to find out?

Hi Coffee, Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. My mother who is 94 has just come out of hosp. and as you can guess i am pretty busy. You would have to check if it applies to your area and no the Council will not tell you afraid you have to find out yourself. Probably they would sooner you did not! My mother has had hers refunded for the years back when she was first diagnosed with Dementia but I had to send in an appeal for anything over a year. [that was successful] again they do not make it easy for you, so do not just take the last years tax refund.Ring the Council up and ask them. I wish you luck and I do hope you can get some council tax back for your mum. Best Wishes from Sofie

No coffee the council would not tell you!!! Doreen said your mum is excempt from CTAX if she lives by herself and will get 25% discount if she lives with you, also she should get it back dated to the day she was diagnosed. Doreen said she got hers back dated and was sent a nice little cheque Yes emoticon

The doctor signed a form stating my mum had a severe mental impairment (SMI form) which was taken to the council office along with a form for housing and council tax benefit. Mum was discounted as living in the house, I was disallowed as having to contribute as I only received Carers allowance for looking after my husband and we were staying with my folks to provide their care to allow them to stay in their own home. It ended up dad only had to pay 25% of the annual bill, and on appeal it was backdated 7 years! The council wanted to credit it to future bills but as my parents were in their 80`s and quite poorly we battled and won the right for a refund.

Council, Benefits Agency they are all alike, tell you nothing.

I recently learned a friend who has struggled through a separation and divorce should have received working tax credits, but nobody (not even her financial advisor) told her she should claim.

It`s a true saying "If you want something done right, do it yourself"

Best of luck

Take care
Meg

Coffee, my sister said Wolverhampton council wanted to credit future council tax bills but my sister protested this saying they had her money which they had no right too so she asked for it back which is why she got a cheque from them so stick to your guns, your mums doctor will have to sign a form stating the date your mum was diagnosed with dementia and the council should back date her claim to that date. Good luck Yes emoticon
