I thought social services had to provide a carers assessment if I requested it? My local council put me through to two or three different social service departments, none of whom seemed to be aware of this.... did I dream it?
I was pretty appalled really. My daughter was referred for child protection because there were concerns about my husband's ability to look after her while I go to work.... and yet, when we moved from an area where we had assistance from homestart to an area where there is no homestart support, social services didn't even want to do an assessment of her needs when I rang them.
No wonder children fall through the net!!!

A Carer's Assessment is an assessment of the Carer's needs not the needs of the person who they are caring for which many people get mixed up wtih. However, saying that to have your child refused an assessment of her needs is neglect from social services and as you said that social services were quick enough when they suspected abuse!
Contact your local carer's centre and they will support when your dealing with social services. I am unaware of which area you are living in but you might find that your carer's centre may be able to offer you a service which will resolve the support which you need.
If you look at the useful information on this site you will see that the Carer's Assessment does fall under the Carers Equal Opportunities Act 2004.
I am a volunteer for a local charity organisation and have lost count how many times Social Services have sign posted a parent to me for information relating to their caring role. I am seething at times when I ask the parent/carer if they have had their Carer's Assessment done once they tell me of their situation which they are in. Every time they state they don't know what one is so obviously they have not had one.
Would you please keep us updated on here as all cares who use this site are always keen to help/support other carers in similar situations.
