hi ive put in a claim form for mobility and to look at my dla again as my son has now turned 3 years old...well hes 4 in september i am currently gettin the middle rate care component.......i am just wondering if anyone could give me any advise on roughly what i will get in my new entitlement??
my son was born with spina bifida and needs to be catherterised 2 times day he is still in nappys curing the day and nighttime and wears splints at nighttime and insoles during the day he cant walk very far as he has an inturned foot and this makes him fall over a lot...
he also has very poor concentration levels(cant sit for 2mins)and also has very bad behaviour problems but this has not been tested yet as the docs say wait till hes about 6 years old.....as it could be adhd?
just wondering what everyone thinks i may be entitled to now.?
when i was awarded middle rate dla he only needed to be catherterised 2times day and wore nighttime spilnts

Re: dla and mobitliy??
Fri 9 May 2008 18:37Hi Sarah,
I would have suggested you make sure you have supporting letters from anyone involved in your sons care, e.g social worker, GP, specialist, community nurse, anything like OT or Physio etc etc.
these would be included in with your claim form (so they cant say they have lost them!)You need to state how many times a night you are in with your son e.g at least 3 for example, or more if it is more.
to receive high rate dla etc you need he needs to need attention DAY AND NIGHT.
as far as mobility is concerned, it is easier to get if hes on high rate dla (this is what ive found anyway)
although he can walk a SHORT distance, he is in pain and is a danger to himself and others as he could fall somewhere dangerous, like crossing the road, or falling into the road.
you need to say what you would like to do with your son if you had mob for him, e.g swimming, park, seeing family, horse riding whatever, (it's no good just to say to take him shopping with you is what i mean!) it has to be for his benefit.I would suggest from what you say he should be entitled to high rate but im not the judge and jury! (unfortunately or id bancrupt the state in a week by giving it to everyone lol)
if they turn you down you can appeal and send all those supporting letters like i mentioned before.
Good luch and let us know how you get on.

Re: dla and mobitliy??
Sat 10 May 2008 14:41Hi Sarah.
This should help you sarah as it said your must be get the high rate of DLA before you can get a motor car. by reading what you have said your son should be on the high rate of DLA if not why not. I hope this helps.
How the scheme works
The Motability Scheme can help you with leasing or buying a car if you're getting the War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement or the higher rate of the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA). Even if you don't drive, you can apply for a car as a passenger and propose two other people as your drivers. You can also apply for a car on behalf of a child aged three or over who is entitled to the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance.

hi, another two penn'orth!
I had to appeal 6 [yes, SIX!!] times before they gave me higher rate DLA, but I got that and then the car in rapid succession.
It took a further 12 months to get my low rate carer allowance upgraded to middle rate (got that this week!)Hearing today's news about how much we'll all have to pay for Care in a few years from now makes me very afraid. Over 25% of us will apparently be OVER 85 [how do they 'know' we'll survive that long????} Will I have to keep working until I drop from exhaustion simply in order to PAY for a CARER? It sounds like it ...........!
